Mopani Places Mines On Care And Maintenance

Mopani has placed Nkaka and Mufulira mines on care and maintenance as a result of the challenging operating, regulatory and macro-economic environment.

Mopani Copper Mines Plc also noted the impacts of the rapid decline in the copper price and disruptions arising from the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the company’s Public Relations Manager Nebert Mulenga, “Mopani has had to place a number of projects it was in the process of commissioning on hold until key personnel are able to travel to site.”

The company has stated that the transition is important in helping to protect the company’s value until market conditions improve.

The closure is expected to last for three months and is effective as of Wednesday April 8. During this time permanent employees will continue to receive their base salaries. The company has also confirmed that employees and their dependents will also continue to receive healthcare.

“The health and safety of the workforce and surrounding communities is our top priority. Mopani will engage with its employees, contractors and local communities regarding the impact of any operational change. Mopani remains committed to supporting its community projects, hospitals and schools during the period of C&M. Mopani will work with the local authorities and community leaders on how best it can continue to support its partners in light of the government decrees relating to minimizing the spread of COVID-19,” Mulenga stated.

The move comes despite the opposition of Minister of Mines Richard Musukwa, who has objected to the plans and said on Tuesday that the government has refused to grant Mopani’s request.

Meanwhile, First Quantum Minerals (FQM) has stated its commitment to abiding by government policies and measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Among the measures instituted by the mining company are a 14 days self quarantine for company staff returning from travel outside of the country and Covid-19 screening for people entering and leaving the mining site. Sensitization activities are also underway, including on social distancing and hygiene practices.

FQM last week announced a donation of K2.7 million towards the fight against coronavrius in North Western Province, as well as a pledge to buy 10,000 test kits.
