UNDP to Launch Mining Technology Hub in Zambia

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has announced plans to establish a Mining Technology (MinTech) hub in Zambia, with an investment of over K160 million.

This was revealed at the Timbuktoo Retreat Strategy in Cape Town, South Africa.

The facility will become a focal point for innovation and collaboration within the mining sector, concentrating on utilising technology to enhance sustainability, efficiency, and safety.

According to Ahunna Eziakonwa, UNDP's Regional Director for Africa, Zambia was not initially included among the countries set to benefit from this investment. However, after a meeting with President Hichilema, a decision was made to extend the initiative to Zambia. Eziakonwa commended the President’s commitment to making the country an industrial hub and cited its mining potential as a major factor influencing UNDP's decision.

The Minister of Technology and Science, Felix Mutati, stated that the establishment of a MinTech hub in Zambia is a milestone for the government’s policy of promoting value addition.

Former Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo praised Zambia's leadership in the mining sector, stating that the mining hub would support existing investments in the sector.

The hub will join together stakeholders from the government, industry, academia, and wider society to exchange knowledge, develop solutions, and promote positive practices within the mining sector.
