Global Fund Allocates $77M to Combat Malaria in Zambia

In a significant move toward combatting malaria in Zambia, the Global Fund has allocated a substantial sum of over K2 billion. The funds, provided to support malaria interventions, were handed over last year following a formal request for financial assistance. This development comes as malaria continues to pose a significant health challenge in the country, with statistics revealing a daily toll of four deaths and approximately 30,000 reported cases.

Basiku Hamainza, acting director of the National Malaria Elimination Centre, underscored the urgency of addressing the threat of malaria, given its curable and preventable nature. Hamainza expressed concern over the high incidence rate, stressing the need for robust intervention measures.

Dr. Hamainza outlined the planned allocation of funds, highlighting key areas such as the expansion of community worker training, distribution of mosquito nets, indoor residual spraying, and public awareness campaigns. These initiatives aim to support the country's capacity to effectively combat malaria.

In a call to action, Dr. Hamainza urged individuals to take personal responsibility in safeguarding themselves against malaria, emphasising the importance of preventive measures.
