Manyigna Bans Movement Of Cattle

The Department of Livestock and Fisheries in Manyinga district has banned the movement of cattle both in and outside the district as the region struggles with an outbreak of Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia.

Authorities have so far received 30 reports of the disease from local farmers in Kavungu, Kalolwa, Kandala, Kamyeji and St Kalemba.

Acting district fisheries and livestock coordinator Kelvin Mutangama has announced that while the ban remains in place all slaughtered animals at abattoirs and slaughter slabs will require post-mortem inspections by vets in conjunction with public health inspectors.

He added that the disease is deadly and if not contained could wipe out huge numbers of livestock in Zambia.

“Any cattle found with the disease must be slaughtered immediately together with all other contact cattle in that community,” he said.

Manyinga District Commissioner Geoffrey Malayiti has also warned all cattle traders and butchers to adhere to the measures and ensure that they do not buy any animals from outside the district.
