Work Stops On Kazungula Bridge After Government Fails To Pay

Contractors from Daewoo have stopped work on the Kazungula Bridge after the government failed to pay the company what it is owed.

In a letter dated 5th December, Daewoo Engingeering and Construction project manager Tae Kim said the company had urged the government to fulfil its obligations several times but had not received any feedback.

Mr Kim said that, coupled with the financial climate and Zambia’s recent debt default, the contractor feels greatly alarmed.

He concluded that the company would use the project’s remaining balance to pay its employees’ wages.

Construction of the $260 million bridge was halted once before in March 2019 after the government again failed to pay its contractors.
