KCM Split Into Two Companies

Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) is being restructured into two subsidiary companies as of February 1, 2021. Namely, KCM SmelterCo Limited, and Konkola Mineral Resources Limited.

Under the new structure the companies will operate under different names and will have two separate management structures and employee arrangements.

The move was announced by the company’s Acting Chief Executive Officer Enock Mponda, who said it was hoped that the move will increase efficiency, support optimization and generate business opportunities.

While KCM SmelterCo Limited has existed as a fully owned company of KCM since 2002 it has been dormant.

According to Mponda the decision to restructure KCM has undergone wide consultation with key stakeholders, including the relevant Authorities, Labour Unions representing workers at KCM and the Company Management. Employee welfare was paramount in the consultations.

All employees working directly for KCM are expected to be offered new contracts for employment at one of the two companies.
