Power Output To Increase At Kariba Hydro Station
The Kariba Hydro Power Station is set to increase its power output after the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) decided to allocate more water for electricity generation in Zimbabwe and Zambia.
The decision follows improved water flow into the Kariba Dam and might save Zambia from importing so much external electricity, thereby reducing the country’s dependency on foreign currency.
ZRA’s Chief Executive Officer Munyaradzi Munodawafa said water levels at the dam had increased by four billion cubic metres in recent weeks.
He added that the additional water allocation would be shared equally between the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) and the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO).
The ZRA will continue to monitor water levels at the dam but it has already upped its allocation for the year from 23 billion cubic metres, to 27 billion cubic metres.
