Kabompo Livestock Threatened By Killer Disease
The department of fisheries and livestock in Kabompo district, North Western Province has warned of an outbreak of the deadly Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP) disease, which threatens to wipe out cattle populations in the district. Authorities have advised farmers to report any livestock movement from other areas into the district.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Kabompo on Sunday, veterinary coordinator Geshom Chungu warned that the disease had the capacity to wipe out the district’s livestock population in a short period of time.
“We have an an outbreak of CBPP livestock disease which has affected almost the whole district, thus all movement of animals should first be reported to the department of veterinary”, he said.
The veterinary department is advising farmers to slaughter any animal suspected of carrying CBPP in order to further reduce the spread of the disease.
At the same event, district commissioner Patrick Kasoka warned locals to be on guard for con artists offering unauthorised livestock empowerment schemes.
Mr Kasoka said he was aware of organisations soliciting money from people in exchange for various livestock such as goats and chickens. He urged the public to report any such individuals to the police as several people have already been swindled.
