ZNFU Request Rise In Maize Floor Price

The Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU) have called on the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to increase the floor price of maize to help farmers sell their crop for a profit.

ZNFU President Jervis Zimba has noted that an increased floor price would help farmers to make an increased profit from the sale of maize.  

Last year, maize sold for K110 which Mr Zimba states is not enough to support farmers to support their livelihoods.

“Most farmers are at a loss with the price the FRA offered, but luckily there is an alternative market available by the private sector.”

The private sector has been an important source of income for farmers in the country which ensures them an important profit in the sale of their crop.   

Subsequently, an attractive price offered by the Food Reserve Agency would lure farmers to sell to them.

The request follows a similar call to increase the price of maize by farmers in Chipata. 

The large increase in cost of fertiliser from K380 to K550 is the main reason behind a request to increase the floor price, as inflation drives up the price of goods within the country.
