Disaster Management Unit Receives Over 5 Million To Manage The Effects Of Drought

The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) has received funds amounting to US$ 5.3 million as insurance to be used against the effects of drought.

The public unit outlined that the funds will act as one of the critical interventions that the government can use to mitigate the impacts of disasters, specifically droughts.

DMMU National Coordinator, Gabriel Pollen, made the announcement today following a speech to journalists. 

He said that by assessing the impacts caused by drought the government can enable individuals to self-support to mitigate against these issues.

Further, he outlined that the government is encouraging newly settled communities to use these empowerment programs in order to more efficiently support the country’s economic growth.

He stated, “DMMU’s objective is to optimize resource use and what this means is that the department is undergoing a radical fundamental shift on how public resources are being utilized. This implies that we are pumping resources towards disaster risk prevention as opposed to response.”

The coordinator also outlined plans to resettle such communities who wish to be so, stating that land had been secured for resettlement.

He also explained that the government was working closely with communities to implement long-term solutions. One of the main issues being the collapse of housing due to heavy rainfall.
