Bumper Maize Harvest Trumps 2021/22 Record Year

Zambia Agriculture Minister, Reuben Mtolo, was pleased to announced that a harvest of more than 3.2 million metric tonnes of maize has been recorded in Zambia this farming season.

The Minister said that Zambia is now holding a stock of 3.7 million metric tonnes, as carryover from 2022 was recorded on 1 May as 451,000 metric tonnes.

Mr. Mtolo revealed these impressive statistics as part of the 2022-23 Crop Forecast Survey. Many will be relieved to hear that this harvest guarantees food security right through to next harvest season in May 2024.

When asked how such a large harvest had been achieved, Chief Statistician at the Zambia Statistics Agency, Mulenga Musepa, said that the main cause was government schemes which had promoted better farming technologies and techniques at prices subsidised by programmes including USAID.
