Thabo Kawana Expresses Confidence in Zambia’s Economy, Announces New Cancer Hospital
Thabo Kawana, Director at the Ministry of Information and Media, has spoken of his confidence in the country’s economic recovery.
Speaking on Muvi TV’s Assignment Programme, ‘Zambians’ Scorecard of the UPND’, he highlighted in particular the progress made by President Hakainde Hichilema’s New Dawn government. “With the coming in of the New Dawn government, we have started registering positive growth and the international community has opened up to us”.
Kawana emphasised how Hichilema has delivered on many of the promises made during his election campaign, saying “On the checklist of promises made by the UPND while in opposition, the scorecard is impressive”. He noted the fulfillment of many commitments made while the current government was in opposition, including free education, the partial withdrawal of pension funds, and the payment of pension benefits to retirees.
During his stint on the show, Kawana also made the announcement of the development of a new cancer hospital in Ndola. He described how the Ministry of Health, along with various partners and stakeholders, had signed a contract for an “ultra-modern” hospital, expected to be completed within the coming year.
This is very welcome news, as it will ease the burden on the country’s only comprehensive cancer treatment centre, the Cancer Diseases Hospital (CDH) in Lusaka, and allow patients greater access to treatment across Zambia.
The CDH is also set to benefit from Treasury funds directed to the hospital for the purchase of new machines. Kawana announced that “issues surrounded the operations of the facility will soon be a thing of the past”.
Finally, he thanked the people of Zambia: “the New Dawn government is indebted to the Zambian people who gave it the mandate to preside over the affairs of the country”.
