Government Extends Cash for Work Program to One Year
The government has extended the Cash for Work program from six months to one year of implementation.
The Cash for Work (CFW) programme was established to support 85 districts across Zambia that have been negatively affected by droughts during the 2023/2024 farming season.
Local Government Permanent Secretary Nicholas Phiri has confirmed the rollout, stating that the increase is due to the overwhelming response the program has received.
“The initial design of the programme was for six months, and now the government, having seen how overwhelmingly positively this programme has been received, has extended the program into 2025 for another year with an outlay of 2 billion Kwacha; right now the project is sat on a budget of 4 billion for cash for work, and that is very significant,” said Mr Phiri.
The Permanent Secretary continued, “In Lundazi, the community has cleared a stretch of 15k of the road by excavating it and stamping it to facilitate the machinery's passing. This shows the impact it is having in local communities.”
