Chongwe District Receives Solar-Powered Water Pumps

Over 1.2 million Kwacha has been spent constructing a solar-powered water pump project in Sylvia Masebo Compound in Chongwe district.

Funded by WaterAid, the people of Chongwe district have been gifted 30,000 litres of water and ten water kiosks.

The project aims to benefit over 7,000 residents by softening the effects of the dried-up boreholes caused by the drought. In addition to the new solar-powered water pumps, WaterAid donated 1000 bottles of chlorine to households in the district.

The Minister for Water Development and Sanitation, Collins Nzovu officiated at the announcement event, explaining that the government has embarked on a number of Projects to mitigate the challenge of water droughts in Chongwe and across the country.

Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company has been tasked with overseeing the project for routine maintenance. Chongwe’s MP, Sylvia Masebo, expressed her confidence that Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company “will be able to maintain [the solar-powered pumps] and not have breakdowns.”

Christopher Habeenzu, Chongwe’s Mayor, added, “It may look small in terms of money or project cost, but in terms of its value to us and our people, it's a huge contribution.”
