Redesigned Kwacha Banknotes to be Launched by Bank of Zambia on Monday 31st

A new family of Kwacha banknotes will be launched by the Bank of Zambia on Monday 31st March, whereupon they will immediately become legal tender, and the process of phasing out the previous designs will begin.

The redesigned notes are the 500, 200, 50, 20, and 10 Kwacha notes. First and foremost, the new notes will serve a practical purpose; they are designed to be more durable and long-lasting, as well as more identifiable to visually-impaired people. Furthermore, it is intended that the new notes will reflect national pride, and tell a story about Zambia’s rich heritage. Depictions on the notes include Victoria Falls and the African Buffalo. Director of the National Heritage Conservation Commission, Kagolis Mwamulowe, told ZNBC News that the notes are intended to showcase “any area that has got unique natural heritage, for example unique flora or unique flora”.

Leonard Mwanza, CEO of the Bankers’ Association of Zambia, ensured the public that banks and ATMs are fully prepared for Monday’s rollout, the transition will be smooth and cause little disruption for the everyday consumer.
