The University Teaching Hospital has successfully completed their first ever kidney transplant.

Health Minister Dr Chitalu Chilufya announced the news earlier, noting that a team of medics from both India and Zambia conducted the four-hour surgery on Wednesday this week. The team was led by Dr Michael Mbambiko.

Dr Chilufya says the successful operation eases the pressure and costs of referring patients abroad which costs government about 2 million United States dollars annually.

He visited the donor and recipient, who are brothers, and confirmed both are in a stable condition.

The mother of the donor and recipient has expressed gratitude to the medical team for the successful operation, saying the burden of dialysis has been eased.
