Two Shot In Uganda, One Dead In South Africa
In South Africa a man has been shot dead by law enforcement officials during the lockdown, which began on Thursday of last week. The incident took place during a lockdown patrol on Sunday as officers sought to disperse groups of people who had gathered in violation of the measures announced by the government in response to the coronavirus outbreak. Reports suggest that the man’s children may also have been wounded in the shooting with allegations that officers did not issue any warnings before firing.
Meanwhile, in Uganda police shot and wounded two people for violating a presidential directive on transport. President Museveni had previously announced a ban of public transport for a period of two weeks in response to the pandemic.
The two men are reported as having been caught riding a motorbike in Kampala as they travelled to work. According to local media reports police shot one in the leg and the other in the stomach, with the pair admitted to Kampala hospital for treatment.
Kampala police spokesman Patrick Onyango has alleged that the men had tried to attack a police officer.
