Police Search For Officer Who Resigned On Social Media
Police in Muchinga Province have launched a manhunt for Sergeant Jason Chipepo, a police officer who announced his resignation on social media on Thursday.
In a video which went viral on the internet, Sergeant Chipepo announced that he had been avoiding work since February. He said that he had now decided to resign from the police force due to various instances of corruption and political interference in the service.
He added that he was sceptical of why political parties such as the PF, UPND and NDC were allowed to have private security services, which he said were undermining the work of the police.
Zambia Police spokesperson Esther Katongo said police in Muchinga had been looking for the officer for a long time after he had been persistently absent from duty.
Mrs Katongo said Sergeant Chipepo last reported for duty on 2nd February 2020 and that police had not yet received any communication from him about his resignation.
She added that desertion by police officers is a criminal offence, triable in a criminal court.
