Kulamba Traditional Ceremony Cancelled Due To Covid
The Chewa people of Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique have been forced to cancel their traditional Kulamba Ceremony because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Paramount Chief Kalonga Gawa Undi of the Chewa people has directed that the ceremony, which usually takes place at the end of August, be cancelled in light of the current dangers to celebrants’ health and wellbeing.
Chief Kalonga Gawa Undi thanked the governments of Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique for their support of the Chewa people over the years and urged well-wishers to look forward to future celebrations.
The traditional leader has meanwhile advised his subjects to adhere strictly to Covid-19 guidelines, adding that following health advice is the only way the pandemic will be defeated.
In related news the Ukusefya Pangwena ceremony of the Bemba people, scheduled for the 15th August in Mungwi, Northern Province, has also been cancelled.
The ceremony’s organizing committee said the cancellation was due to the great danger presented by the coronavirus pandemic.
