Storm Damages Maternity Wing In Milenge
Heavy rain and winds have caused a tree to collapse on the Kapalala Rural Health Center in Mlenge District, damaging the clinic’s maternity wing.
Acting district health director Geoblyn Mutunga said no one was injured as there were no patients in the wing at the time of the incident.
The incident took place in the early hours of the morning on 13th February. Mr Mutunga says the damage will severely affect the clinic’s ability to provide maternity care:
“The roof has been partly blown off at the part the delivery beds are placed hence we can no longer use this structure for deliveries. Today’s patients narrowly escaped the disaster as both came a few hours after the incident. And so, we improvised a delivery room,” he said.
The health director has called for urgent repairs as health personnel continue to cater to the region’s 5,000 residents in improvised labour facilities.
Milenge’s district administrative officer, Kanonka Chola, has assured citizens that the government will act quickly to repair the damage.
“The district administration understands the importance of this structure and we will do everything possible to renovate it within the shortest possible time,” he promised.
Mr Chola also said his department would look into the possibility of pruning tress near the facility, to prevent similar accidents in the future.
