COVID-19 Deaths Reach New High

On Sunday the Ministry of Health recorded 49 COVID-19 deaths, the highest number of coronavirus-related deaths in a single day since the outbreak of the pandemic over a year ago.

Total COVID-19 deaths have reached 1,664 since the start of the pandemic, according to ministry figures.

Speaking on the matter, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health in change of Technical Services Kennedy Malama said that the deaths were disheartening and could have been prevented.

“Losing lives at the rate we are reporting from a preventative disease is disheartening to us all, particularly that public health and social measures when adhered can have an immediate impact,” he said.

The statement appears to blame the population for not abiding to COVID-19 restrictions, yet does not acknowledge the government’s failings in relation to COVID-19 restrictions.

Not only did the Patriotic Front fail to obtain COVID-19 vaccines as fast as other African countries, they continued to campaign against their own instruction to prevent political campaigning to stop the spread of COVID-19.
