Fourteen Dead In Fatal Road Crash In Southern Province
FOURTEEN people have died while 17 have been injured in a road traffic accident which happened in Pemba district on Great North Road.
Involved in the accident was a Mitsubishi Rosa registration bus number AJE 1365 belonging to Maamba United Church of Zambia driven by Webster Siyamayuwa 35 and a Freightliner Truck registration number ALH 6626 AAN 3923T driven by Malufu Bruno 30 of Solobon compound in Kafue.
Southern province commanding officer Alfred Nawa has told Mwebantu in a media statement that the accident happened when the driver of the Mitsubishi Rosa bus failed to keep to his near side and in the process collided with the Freightliner truck.
He said due to the impact of the accident, the driver of the Rosa bus and 13 passengers died on the spot.
Mr Nawa said those who died on the spot included Chiboola Beene of Munyumbwe in Gweembe District, Panji Mweetwa of Unknown address, Merry Chipikili of Kabanana compound in Maamba.
He said 10 others who include five females, four males and a one year old six months baby are yet to be identified.
“Seventeen were seriously injured including one passenger from the truck namely, Annie Hambwaza of Maamba 55 who sustained deep cuts on the head and bleeding from the nose, unidentified female adult of Maamba who sustained internal injuries and is unconscious, Nalishebo Simunji 32 of Maamba who sustained swollen forehead and backache,” he said.
He said others are Pesia Sichifumba of Maamba 18 who sustained painful left leg and general body pains, a Jevenile 15 of Kabanana compound in Maamba who sustained a fractured right arm and swollen forehead, Jacqueline Habeenzu 32 of Maamba who sustained general body pains, Kamwi Simasiku 35 of Maamba who sustained a fractured right arm and general body pains and Pharoah Siabeke 21 of Sinazongwe who also sustained cuts on the forehead and general body pains.
He said Aongola Maureen 32 of Kalomo sustained a fractured right arm and chest pains, Lizzy Banda 22 of Kamwala in Lusaka sustained fractured legs and bruises on the fore head, Nyanga Ander 43 of Ngoma compound in Maamba sustained a fractured left leg and chest pains and Chileshe Gloria 35 of Maamba sustained deep cuts on her left leg and chest pains.
“Kelly Sigabwe 22 of Sinazeze sustained chest pains and general body pains, a juvenile adult aged 19 sustained cuts on the head and fractured legs, Christine Kalimukwa 39 of Maamba complained of painful legs and backache, an unidentified male passenger who sustained internal injuries and is also unconscious and Weddy Mbuzi 26 who was a passenger on the truck of Solobon Compound in Kafue,” he said.
Mr Nawa said all the 17 victims are admitted to Monze Mission Hospital.
He said the Mitsubishi Rosa bus was extensively damaged while the truck had its front part extensively damaged with its driver escaping unhurt.
