Police Intercept Sulphur Truck Smuggling 15 Illegal Migrants Into Zambia
Fifteen illegal immigrants, suspected to be Ethiopian and Somali nationals, were intercepted by police in Shiwang’andu District while being smuggled in a Tanzanian-registered truck carrying sulphur.
The police officers were on patrol when they noticed a person peeping under a tent on the truck, leading them to conduct a search that uncovered the illegal immigrants.
The driver and co-driver of the truck were also arrested, and the vehicle was impounded.
The incident underscores the ongoing challenges of illegal immigration in Zambia, and the police are calling on the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity or individuals to help them combat this problem.
Danny Mwale, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, described the interception of the truck and trailer as a significant achievement in the police's efforts to ensure the security of Zambia's borders.
He also reiterated the police's commitment to working with partners to address the challenges of illegal immigration and human trafficking in the country.
The Department of Immigration in Chinsali has been informed of the incident, and investigations are ongoing.
The police are urging members of the public to report any suspicious activity or individuals to help curb illegal immigration, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive and coordinated approach to tackling the issue.
