Government Allocates Funds to Boost Water Security in Luangeni Constituency
The Luangeni constituency of Chipata District received government funding to construct one new dam and rehabilitate four existing dams, addressing critical water security challenges in the region. The initiative comes as a response to the region’s multi-dimensional poverty, with the Luangeni constituency ranked as the second poorest constituency in the Joint Integrated Development Plan (JIDP) at 85%, surpassing the provincial average of 82%.
Eastern Province Permanent Secretary, Paul Thole, highlighted the importance of the project to the ZNBC, stating that it will provide “sufficient watering points for their animals”, a vital resource for residents. The release of funds in this area will help alleviate poverty by mitigating water challenges and enhancing livelihoods.
Luangeni Member of Parliament and Second Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Moyo, expressed gratitude to President Hakainde Hichilema for actively addressing the community’s pressing needs. He emphasised that not only will the improved water infrastructure support livestock farming in the area but also encourage farmers to adopt irrigation practices, promoting agricultural resilience.
The construction and rehabilitation of dams will be carried out by the Zambia National Services (ZNS) and private contractors. Eastern Province Water Development Officer, Robert Kanene, says over 4 million Kwacha has been allocated to the Msupadzi Two dam, with construction set to begin soon and expected to be completed within a year.
The investment highlights the government’s commitment to combating the effects of drought and enhancing water security in underprivileged regions, marking a significant step towards alleviating poverty and promoting sustainable development in the region.
