Grade 7 and 9 Exam Results Show Improved Performance

Recently released national examination results show improved performance across Grade 7 and 9 levels, according to Education Minister Douglas Syakalima.

According to the latest figures, both grade levels recorded a 2.3% increase in pass rates compared to 2023. 169,280 pupils out of 302,870 candidates successfully obtained their Junior Secondary School Leaving Certificate at the Grade 9 level.

The Primary School Leaving Certificate results were equally encouraging, with 350,116 candidates passing out of 491,785 examinees, achieving a 71.19% pass rate. The examination saw participation from 234,097 boys and 257,688 girls.

“This is further confirmation that despite the increase in the numbers of learners, quality has not been compromised, based on the measures the New Dawn Government has implemented over the three years,”Syakalima said.

The progression rate from primary to secondary school (now designated as form one) showed improvement, rising to 71.19% in 2024 from 69% the previous year.

Looking ahead, the Ministry has announced plans to implement the 2023 Zambia Curriculum in phases beginning in 2025. The first phase will cover Early Childhood Education (Level 1), Primary Education (Grade 1), and Secondary Education (Form 1), with classes scheduled to commence on 10 February 2025.

The delayed start date will allow sufficient time for the printing and distribution of teaching materials and teacher orientation programs, according to the Minister.
