CBU Distributes 5,000 Condoms Monthly to Stop Rise in STIs
Copperbelt University (CBU) is distributing more than 5,000 condoms each month.
The university, which has its main campus in Kitwe and, has around 15,000 students. According to reports by ZNBC CBU Acting head of Public Health, Charity Kaziya has said that their distribution is intended to stop the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among its student population.
50 trained peer educators are responsible for the distribution, which has been accompanied by the public health office opening a youth friendly corner in response to an apparent increase in sexual activities.
According to Ms Kaziya the friendly corner aims to provide students with important information on sexual and reproductive health.
Reports also state that the university’s public health department has noticed an increase in the use of emergency contraceptives, with CBU midwife Matildah Lukwesa stating that a door to door family planning services effort is being undertaken in a bid to reverse the trend.
