22-Year-Old UNZA Student Fatally Electrocuted
Students from the University of Zambia (UNZA) are mourning the death of Margaret Chibesakunda, a 22-year-old third-year student studying Public Administration. Chibesakunda died from an electric shock on April 6 at approximately 21:30 while trying to plug in her phone charger at the UNZA Great East Road Campus, October Hostels.
According to police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, Chibesakunda sustained severe burns to her neck, right elbow, and leg as a result of the shock. Her body has been taken to the University Teaching Hospital Mortuary for further investigation, including a postmortem examination and funeral arrangements.
Concerns have been raised regarding the safety of electrical infrastructure within the university premises following the incident. Students have highlighted issues such as missing plugs, sockets, adaptors, and exposed wires.
This incident has prompted calls for UNZA management to address concerns regarding electrical installations across campus. There are demands for immediate action to prevent similar accidents in the future and prioritise student safety.
UNZA Management has implemented measures to ensure a thorough investigation into the electrocution of Chibesakunda by the authorities. UNZA Registrar Theresa Chalwe has stated that a detailed report will be provided upon the conclusion of investigations.
Chalwe requested privacy for the bereaved family during this period. The university has contacted the family and offered support in any way possible.
