Finland Pledges Support to Combat Chemical Pollution in the Kafue River
The Finnish government has pledged to assist Zambia in tackling chemical pollution in the Kafue River, offering advanced technology as part of its broader humanitarian aid initiatives. The commitment was made by Finnish Ambassador to Zambia, Saana Halinen, during a courtesy visit to Fisheries and Livestock Minister Peter Kapala in Lusaka.
Ambassador Halinen stated that Finland is keen to support environmental protection efforts in Zambia, particularly in addressing the pressing issue of pollution in the Kafue River, which is a vital water source for local communities and wildlife.
Minister Kapala welcomed the support, noting the significant impact the pollution has had on both the environment and livelihoods. He explained that the contamination has forced the government to suspend fishing activities along the river, disrupting food supply and economic stability for many Zambians who rely on the river’s resources.
The collaboration marks a positive step towards restoring the health of one of Zambia’s key rivers. It also highlights growing international cooperation on environmental issues affecting local ecosystems and communities.
