President Lungu pardons 593 inmates

AS a special Christmas present, President Edgar Lungu has pardoned 593 inmates in various correctional facilities countrywide.


And President Lungu has wished citizens a merry Christmas, urging all to remember that Jesus is the reason for the season. 


The President has exercised his prerogative of mercy in accordance with Article 97 of the Constitution.
This is according to a statement released yesterday by Minister of Home Affairs Stephen Kampyongo.
The pardoned inmates are serving short and long-term sentences.


“Of the 593 pardoned inmates, 575 were serving short-term sentences while 18 were serving long-term sentences. Nine of those serving short-term sentences are aged inmates,” he said.

Mr Kampyongo said 43 of the forgiven inmates who were on short-term jail sentences are female while 532 are male
