#JusticeForVespers Two Months On
Two months ago today 4th year student at the University of Zambia Great East road Campus Vespers Shimuzhila died due to suffocation after police officers allegedly threw tear gas canisters into her room during protests by students over unpaid allowances.
Since then various civil society and political actors have called for #JusticeForVespers and action from government in order to bring her killers to book.
Writing on the tragedy earlier today, social activist Laura Miti commented, “Vespers 2 months on! The silence on who killed her continues. I guess Minister Kamoyongo and IG Kanganja are waiting for Vespers name to go silent on the lips of those bothered by her death. Then they can get on with the priority business of spending millions of Kwacha on the teargas and other anti-riot gears that killed Vespers. Maybe one day they will explain why a Zambia at peace is arming police against its own citizens, displaying warlike weapons and vehicles on the streets. Maybe one day they will see to it that there is #JusticeForVespers #DoNotForget.”
