Church Warns On Attempts To Steal 2021 Election

The former Archbishop of Lusaka Telesphore Mpundu has expressed concern that there could be attempts to manipulate the 2021 elections, confirming that the Catholic Church intends to monitor the polls.

Archbishop Mpundu was quoted as stating, “If we did democracy well, there would be no need to monitor elections. Democracy is a game of numbers and so people, especially those that are in a position to do so – the executive – want to manipulate the numbers, to do genetic engineering! Because we are afraid of that, we are going to participate,” during an appearance on Prime TV’s ‘Oxygen of Democracy’.

“We are going to participate so that we make sure that things are done properly and those who want to steal are not going to do it so easily,” he added.

The outspoken clergyman also defended his right to comment on political matters, explaining that politics affects us all as it concerns everything from food to education.

Archbishop Mpundu went on to warn that corruption has also become a big problem in the country and is taking place at the highest levels.

“Things are coming out – it’s not things that we are digging up. Every single year, the Auditor General comes up with horrendous reports of misapplication of public money. Do we hear anything of what happens to those who are guilty? Nothing!” he told viewers.

Mpundu also defended those musicians who have recently come under attack for their anti-government lyrics, claiming they should be free to express their opinions and give voice to the feelings of the people.
