The Synod Bishop Sydney Sichilima has resigned as President of the Council of Churches in Zambia.

The Young African Leadership Initiative has noted that his resignation signals there are troubles amongst the United Church of Zambia. The church mother bodies have found themselves in a position likened to the 3 tyres of a car that are pulling in different directions.

There are concerns they are implicating themselves in mainstream politics rather than providing spiritual leadership.

YALI noted they had expected the church mother bodies to guide the government not turn into an opposer playing political games.

‘We call upon those who preside over these church mother bodies that instead of resigning, they must stand firm and correct the growing practice where they church is being seen to muzzle itself into politics.’
