Wina Ordered To Give Statement On Slow Voter Registration
Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Catherine Namugala has ordered Vice President Inonge Wina to deliver a statement to the house on the ongoing voter registration exercise.
Mrs Wina has been instructed to update the house no later than Tuesday 17th November, owing to the urgency of the matter.
It comes after a point of order from Monze Central MP Jack Mwiimbu on Wednesday, who asked how the government was dealing with widely reported delays to the voter registration exercise.
Voter registration kicked off on Monday, with the Electoral Commission of Zambia aiming to register some 9 million Zambians in little over a month.
Officials from across the political divide have complained of long lines at registration centres as ECZ staff struggle to cope with the sheer volume of voters.
Kanayma MP Elizabeth Phiri has complained of understaffing in her constituency and called on the ECZ to speed up the registration process.
Meanwhile, Justice Minister Given Lubinda has said government is working on fixing ‘hitches’ in the registration process and has vowed not to register himself to vote until the problems are resolved.
