Nkombo Urges Speaker To Table Lungu Impeachment Motion
United Party for National Development (UPND) MP for Mazabuka Central, Garry Nkombo, has urged the Speaker of the National Assembly to immediately table a motion of impeachment against president Lungu. Failing that he would like an explanation for its dismissal in front of the house.
Mr Nkombo initially moved for impeachment in 2018. He claims that President Lungu breached the constitution in 2016 when he failed to hand over power to the speaker following a presidential petition by UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema over the disputed election results of that year.
Speaking to reporters in Lusaka on Friday, Mr Nkombo inquired why it had taken Speaker of the House Patrick Matibini over two years to assess the motion, despite confirming that it had been properly tabled in 2018.
“My message to Dr Matibini is for him to dismiss the motion and give me an explanation or immediately table it before the house. This is because the Speaker confirmed that my motion was properly tabled without any problems,” Nkombo said.
The Mazabuka MP said he was unsurprised by Matibini’s procrastination, given that he too was in breach of the constitution by failing to receive the instruments of power from President Lungu.
“By law, the supreme law of the land, which is the Constitution, both Mr Lungu and Dr Matibini are in breach of the same Constitution as one was supposed to hand over power while the other was supposed to receive the power, ” he concluded.
