ECZ Starts Voter Registration In Prisons

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has commenced voter registration in prisons, with inmates at the Lusaka Central Correctional Facility being among the first to receive their National Registration Cards (NRCs).

According to Senior Superintendent Kenani Masase, the facility houses 1,224 male inmates, of whom 603 require NRCs to allow them to vote.

The National Registration and Passport office have set up a temporary facility at the prison to issue the documents, while the ECZ carries out the actual process of voter registration.

Senior superintendent Masase said the process is going well, in stark contrast to the rest of the country. Voter registration for inmates will run over the course of the next three days.
