PF Member Reports Kitwe Mayor For Corruption

The mayor of Kitwe, Christopher Kang’ombe, has been reported to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) by a member of his own party, the Patriotic Front (PF), over alleged corruption and abuse of office.

PF member Thabo Kawana, who until recently was a part of the party’s national media team, lodged an official complaint with the ACC in Kitwe on Friday, alleging that Kang’ombe had also embezzled public funds.

According to Mr Kawana, Mayor Kang’ombe appointed himself as director and shareholder of the newly incorporated Kitwe United Football Club without following proper procedure or getting approval from the city council.

Kitwe City Council, under Mr Kang’ombe’s direction, then continued to sponsor the football club using public funds, despite the fact that the club was incorporated as a private company in February 2020, again at Mr Kango’ombe’s instruction.

Earlier this year, the PF suspended Mayor Kango’ombe from party activities for gross indiscipline after he refused to line up and greet First Lady Esther Lungu during her visit to Kitwe.

PF Copperbelt Provincial Chairman Nathan Chanda said Mr Kang’ombe’s actions were not only disrespectful to the first lady but to President Lungu as well, forcing the party to remove Mr Kang’ombe from his other position as Provincial vice-Chairman.

Mr Kango’ombe was allowed to remain in his position of Mayor of Kitwe and is still also a member of the PF.

Meanwhile, Mr Kawana has also reported Kitwe’s former District Commissioner Binwell Mpundu to the police for threatening violence against him on social media.

Mr Kawana says he has been living in fear of Mr Mpundu, who attacked Mr Kawana online after he reported Mayor Kang’ombe for corruption.
