Former Attorney General Labels Bill 10 ‘Toxic’
Former Attorney General Musa Mwenye has labelled Constitutional Amendment Bill 10 as ‘toxic’ and called for the proposed legislation to be withdrawn from parliament.
Mr Mwenye observed that the bill was born from a non-inclusive process and continues to sow division amongst Zambians today.
“If indeed this Bill is being enacted for the benefit of all the people of Zambia, why is there such a determination to pass it notwithstanding the concerns of civil society, the church and other citizens and important stakeholders?” he asked.
The former attorney general said that Zambia’s politicians had more important things to focus on now, namely the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the resulting rise in unemployment, and the proliferation of corruption.
“we are face with persistent abuse of our nationals by some foreign investors, and we are yet to establish the truth around the gassing of our citizens and the instant justice mobs that resulted from that,” he added.
Mr Mwenye highlighted that the proposals outlined in Bill 10 would do nothing to resolve youth unemployment, alleviate poverty, or diminish corruption and the wasteful spending of national resources.
He concluded that Justice Minister Given Lubinda ought to withdraw the controversial legislation until it could benefit from proper consultations by a variety of stakeholders.
