Lusaka Mayor Reported To Police For Assault

Lusaka Mayor Miles Sampa has been reported to the police for the assault of Lawrence Nsoma, a 34-year-old general manager at Memorial Park.

Mr Nsoma told the police that Mr Sampa assaulted to him with a stick and that he had sustained injuries to his face.

Police spokesperson Esther Katongo said the incident occurred at Mr Sampa’s home in Nyumba Yango at 20:30 on 30th May.

Police later received a call from Mr Sampa at 23:00 that evening, saying that six people had trespassed in his home and harassed his workers.

Investigations have been launched into both matters.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, Mr Sampa can be seen apparently whipping Mr Nsoma, telling him never to come to his home again.

The Lusaka Mayor has been the recipient of heavy media attention in recent weeks over his stand against Chinese businesses accused of racially discriminating against Zambian customers.

The mayor personally shut down a Chinese-owned restaurant and barbershop in Lusaka last month, before being reprimanded by the government for revoking trading licenses when he had no authority to do so. He has since apologised to the Chinese community for acting outside of the law.
