Malawi President To Visit Zambia
The recently elected president of Malawi, Lazarus Chakwera is due to arrive in Zambia today, Tuesday, on an official visit.
The visit marks President Chakwera’s first official foreign visit since he was elected in June 2020.
According to minister of foreign affairs Joseph Malanji, the president is visiting Zambia to discuss areas of mutual interest and to boost bilateral relations between the two nations.
“Zambia and Malawi share strong historical bilateral ties and a common border. Our two countries continue to actively cooperate in social, political, and economic areas, within the framework of the Zambia/Malawi Joint Permanent Commission on Defence and Security and the Joint Permanent Commission of Cooperation, for the betterment of our peoples,” said Malanji
President Chakwera is scheduled to hold talks with President Edgar Lungu at State House later and the two heads of state will lay wreaths at the presidential burial site in Embassy Park, Lusaka.
Opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema has also extended a message of welcome to President Chakwera, hailing him as part of “a new generation of African Patriots and distinguished leaders”.
He praised the Malawian leader as a champion of democracy in his country, who spoke to the struggle against poverty and despotism that characterises the experience of many Africans.
