Lusaka Residents Show Support For Mumba

Dozens of Lusaka residents took to the streets today to support New Home Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) leader Nevers Mumba as he faces questioning by police over his allegations that the Patriotic Front (PF) rigged the recent by-election in Lukashya constituency.

From 7am crowds gathered outside police headquarters on Independence Avenue with signs reading “Nevers Fit, PF Weak”, “ECZ Should Go!” And “Nevers say Never”.

The MMD leader has alleged that the PF government contracted a South African IT firm to raid voter roll information from the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) in order to influence the outcome of the Lukashya by-election, which resulted in a PF win. Dr Mumba has accused the PF of plotting to use similar tactics to influence next year’s general elections.

Dr Mumba arrived at police HQ at 9:50, accompanied by MMD officials, United for a Better Zambia (UBZ) president Hector Sondo and his lawyer Jeah Madaika.

National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader Chishimba Kambwili arrived with members of his party at 11 o’clock to show support for Dr Mumba but were held back by riot police.

Dr Mumba was interrogated for over 2 hours, leaving the building in apparently high spirits at 12 o’clock.

“I would like to thank you all for coming through to show solidarity to us. What happened in Lukashya should never happen again. Today is the first step in our journey to save Zambia”, he told the assembled crowds.
