Government Cautions Transport Operators Planning Strikes

Transport and Communications Minister Mutotwe Kafwaya has warned transport operators that it is illegal for them to call on fellow drivers to take part in strikes scheduled for 19th October.

The minister said that drivers did not have the authority to instruct other drivers to strike, calling such action “anarchy” that “cannot be tolerated”.

“I wish to take this opportunity to warn both drivers and transport operators who are spearheading these illegal manoeuvres,” Kafwaya said.

The minister added that police would be deployed to the streets to deal with any trouble makers who might encourage fellow drivers to down tools.

He said that transport was vital to the wellbeing of the Zambian economy and that the government could not allow individuals to sabotage this important sector.
