Suspect In Police Station Shooting Identified
A police officer, suspected of killing two civilians outside Police Force Headquarters in December 2020, has been identified by police high command.
According to Home Affairs Minister Stephen Kampyongo, the unnamed officer has been identified following a conclusive report, which has since been forwarded to the director of public prosecution for immediate action.
The officer allegedly opened fire on civilians during a rally to support opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema on 23 December. The attack resulted in the deaths of two citizens: public prosecutor Nsama Nsama and UPND supporter Joseph Kaunda.
On Tuesday, President Lungu announced that he had received a report into the killings, but did not share its findings publicly, sparking outrage from the Civli Society Constitution Agenda (CiSCA) which accused the president of a coverup.
Speaking to parliament on Thursday, Mr Kampyongo reminded police officers that they had a duty to protect all Zambians and maintain the law at all times.
“As officers you are expected to follow laid down procedures at all times when discharging your duties, further you are required to exhibit high levels of professionalism and discipline when dealing with members of the public” the minister said.
