Shocking Twist In The Tragic Case Of Levy Mkandawire’s Death
A new twist to the tragedy of last week’s fatal car accident that claimed the life of Levy Mkandawire adds more pain and confusion to an already harrowing event.
The police released a new statement on Tuesday afternoon, disclosing that the accident was actually caused by Jetta Kalengo, and not his wife, Jane Mwale, the chief suspect up until this point.
Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga revealed that while Ms Mwale had handed herself over to the police in connection with the offence, Alick Jetta Kalengo had also been detained, and following interrogations it has been established that the husband was behind the wheel of the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Mr Hamoonga said that Mr Kalengo has now confessed that he was in control of the offending BMW X5 (registration number ALM 5955) when it tragically collided with the stationary Toyota of Levy Mkandawire last week.
The horrifying crash was the product of Kalengo’s BMW approaching at reckless speed from the east, losing control, and smashing into the Mr. Mkandawire’s car as he was opening his gate. The impact forced the Toyota against the brick wall with the late UPND Member of Parliament in it, before a pillar of the gate toppled on him.
“Police in Lusaka has made progress in the investigations involving the road traffic accident that caused the death of Honourable Levy Mkandawire who was Member of Parliament for Kabwata Constituency at the gate of his residence along Chalata road, Woodlands extension on 18th November, 2021.police has charged and arrested male Alick Jetta Kalengo aged 56 of plot number 32 Chalata road, Woodlands Extension for four offences,” read Hamoonga’s statement.
Mr Hamoonga added that Mr Kalengo has now been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, using a motor vehicle without a road licence, and using a motor vehicle without insurance.
Not only this, but Mr Kalengo is also set to be charged with giving false information to a public officer, regarding the deceit about his wife’s role in the crime.
Mr Hamoonga said police have also recorded a statement from a witness which collaborated with Ms Mwale’s Statement.
Mr Kalengo is being detained in police custody awaiting court proceedings, while Ms Mwale has since been released.
