Bishop Trevor Mwamba Is The New UNIP President

Anglican Bishop Trevor Mwamba has been elected President of the opposition United National Independence Party (UNIP).

Bishop Mwamba takes over from Tilyenji Kaunda who has been leader of the UNIP over the last 20 years since 2001.

Based in Germany, Bishop Mwamba returned to Zambia in early 2021 to contest the UNIP Presidency. He was elected at the Party’s 4th Extra-Ordinary Congress which was held from the 2nd to the 4th April 2021 at the Premier Hotel.

The top position was contended by Bishop Mwamba, who received 235 votes, Tilyenji Kaunda, who received 201 of the votes, and Timothy Nyirenda who won a mere 28 of the total votes.

The former leader of the party, Mr Kaunda, left immediately after the presidential results were announced and has since refused to comment on the outcome.

The elected members of the party include Mulenga Mwiche as Secretary-General, Cynthia Nyondo as National Treasurer, Beauty Kabwe as National Women Secretary, and Boniface Chapala as National Youth Secretary.

Speaking after his win, Bishop Mwamba said that his victory marks a new beginning for the party who’s vision had previously been concentrated on managing party assets.

The UNIP last governed the country from 1964 to 1991 under Kenneth Kaunda.
