HH Reacts To Billboard Burning

UPND Presidential candidate Hakainde Hichilema’s campaign billboard near Heroes Stadium in Lusaka has been burnt just one day after being mounted.

“They can burn all our billboards like they have been blocking our mobilisation activities, but they will not burn your voters cards,” Hichilema told his supporters on social media.

“This is the kind of lawlessness and primitiveness we have to root out in this country. We urge our supporters not to retaliate,” he continued.

Earlier this month alleged PF cadres were caught on camera attacking a printing company that is making T-shirts for the UPND campaign. The cadres allegedly burned the shirts claiming that they could not be stopped as they enjoyed the protection of the PF leadership.

While President Lungu has called for peaceful campaigns, some have questioned his sincerity in light of some of the company he keeps. Alliance for Community Action Executive Director Laura Miti recently questioned the role of Jay Jay, who is alleged to have beaten police officers, but is campaigning for the President’s re-election in Eastern Province.

“To put it plainly, the President needs cadre violence and lawlessness or else he would end it. In other words, if, today, President Lungu said I have had enough of this, those armoured vehicles and war equipment Minister Kampyongo bought for use against ordinary citizens would be brought to bear against cadre lawlessness. Every last cadre would be disarmed and arrested. And that would be the end of that,” Miti stated.

“Zambia will largely return to normal and many people be able to hustle for a living, if only we get rid of PF thugs and their bullying of private citizens,” Miti advised.
