PF Illegally Threatens Independent Candidates
After being left out of the ruling party adoptions, several Patriotic Front (PF) candidates are considering running as independents, to the dismay of the PF.
In response to threats of these individuals running as independent candidates, the PF in Lusaka has said it will destroy them.
βTo those who want to cheat themselves, who want to go independent, we shall crush them,β PF central committee member Paul Moonga warned.
Such threats go against the constitution which guarantees people the freedom to associate, hold opinion, and to contest in elections. As a result, the PF have no legal backing to disallow these individuals to act as individual candidates.
The threat questions the level of democracy within the country, subsequently raising questions as to how the PF can be so sure that an independent candidate would lose against one who belongs to their ruling party.
