Chief Justice Dies In Egypt

Ireen Chirwa Mambilima, Chief Justice of Zambia, has died.

On Sunday evening the Secretary to Cabinet Dr Simon Miti announced the passing of Chief Justice Mambilima. She passed in a private hospital in Cairo, Egypt, having travelled to the country on official business 10 days prior.

More details are due to be released to the nation on the details of Ms Chirwa’s death.

First joining the Court in 1985, Justice Mambilima served as a Commissioner of the High Court before serving as Judge of the High Court between 1989 and 2002. She had several roles within the court during her successful career.

In 2003 she served as Sessional Judge of the Supreme Court of the Gambia as well as having served twice as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) between 2005 and 2015. During this period she also served as Deputy Chief Justice from 2008 to 2015.

She also once served as the President of the Zambia Association of Women Judges in 2011.

On the 26th February 2015 Justice Mambilima was appointed as the first female Chief Justice of the Republic of Zambia, a role which she served in until her passing on Sunday.
