UPND Promises To Increase Social Cash Transfer, Help The Most Vulnerable

The United Party for National Development (UPND) have dismissed claims made by the Patriotic Front (PF) that they intended to suspend the delivery of social cash transfers once elected in August.

A statement released to the media by the party Presidential Spokesperson, Anthony Bwalya, confirmed that, contrary to reports released by the PF, the UPND intended to increase social cash transfers by 350 Kwacha per person per month once elected to power in August.

The statement stated that the UPND were disappointed that the PF continued to “swindle social cash transfer recipients by delivering K150 per recipient per month” further adding that the UPND will increase social cash transfer to K500 per person per month from August when voted in to power.

It continued by providing reason as to why the PF were only able to afford to provide K150 under the current social cash transfer programme.

“The reason the PF government cannot pay them [social cash transfer recipients] a minimum of K500 per month is because donor support towards social cash transfer wash withdrawn after the theft of over $4m of donor money by PF officials,” the statement read.

The PF minister in question was convicted shortly after the allegations came to light.

An increase in the social cash transfer will enable the UPND to “uplift the welfare of the most vulnerable”.
