Voters Report Polling Station Errors

As voters turn out in numbers today there have been some worrying reports of people queueing up to vote only to find that they have been allocated to a different polling station.

Alliance for Community Action Executive Director Laura Miti is among those to have raised concern.

“My niece registered to vote at Chainda Primary School but been told that she has to go to Chongwe. Apparently there is a Chainda School in Avondale and one in Chongwe,” Miti explained on social media this morning.

“If your card lists Chainda as the polling District like in the pic, head to Chongwe. If it says Avondale, go to the better known Chainda Primary. Big issue is many people who thought they were voting from Avondale are stuck. Those who can, are giving each other lifts. If you are driving to Chongwe and have space in your car, please pass by Avondale and give someone a lift,” she advised.

Meanwhile, the UPND have reported that 200 voters at Kamwala primary school have run into serious problems as they have found that their names are directed to a polling station in Eastern Province despite having registered locally.

“There are a lot of people who have been complaining. Look at us. We have been here since 0100 waiting to vote. We want change,” one voter explained.

“We are being denied to vote but this voters’ card is registered under Kamwala primary school but we come here and we are told the polling station we are supposed to go is in Eastern Province,” another voter stated as he showed his card to the cameras.

The voters raised their concern that not only they can’t vote, but that also there could be people in Eastern Province using their IDs to vote on their behalf. According to some of the voters they had verified their registration. Others shared concerns that they had been deliberately disenfranchised.
