HH Calls For Peace Following Election Victory
President-elect Hakainde Hichilema has called on Zambians to refrain from violence and support a peaceful transition of power following his landslide victory in Thursday’s general elections.
The United Party for National Development leader wrote on Facebook that he would like to issue a “stern warning” to any citizens engaging in criminal activities.
“We urge the general public to cooperate with the police and report any such acts. Criminality will not be tolerated from this point forward,” he said.
It comes after a number of reports of Zambians damaging property immediately following the election results early this morning.
Diamond TV shared images of The Edgar Chagwa Lungu in Kitwe, which had been ransacked in the early hours of Monday morning.
HH is expected to address the media from his home shortly, following the official resignation of President Lungu just hours before.
The president-elect secured a conclusive victory last night, beating Mr Lungu by a margin of 996,000 votes after 155/156 constituencies were counted. Soon after HH was declared president, the UPND’s chairman for elections, Garry Nkombo, said the party would quickly set about addressing the serious economic challenges which Zambia is facing.
